Chapter 10
The hunt had gone well. Although Robert had not carried a weapon, he was greeted as a hero just as other members of the hunting party were upon their return to the village. They carried with them six deer and a dozen rabbits, turkeys and quail. He could not wait for the day when he had his own bow and could fully contribute to the hunt.
As it was, he had contributed by flushing out small game and blocking the retreat of fleeing deer. He had also earned the respect of the braves when he revealed to them that he had once owned and could shoot a gun. These things enhanced his status within the tribe, and he could tell by the way he nodded and smiled Red Horse’s pride in him as well.
That night there was a celebration. The people gathered in the large open area at the center of the village. They feasted on the spoils of the hunt. Blue Jacket commended them for a job well done. The Deer Dance followed his speech.
Three men: Red Horse, Sleeping Hawk and Deer Spirit, naked except for a pouch covering their genitals, and a set of antlers on their heads, stood with their backs to a tall pole in the middle of the clearing. Six other men, wearing war paint and carrying bows approached to the beat of a drum. The deer-men charged the hunters, who retreated. From the other side of the clearing six more men appeared. The deer-men turned and again charged this group. As they did, the first group of hunters approached again. The dance continued with the deer and the hunters vying for the upper hand.
Although there were more than a dozen very handsome men dancing to the pulsing beat of the drum, Robert looked at only one. He could not take his eyes off the man who had taken him to heights of physical and emotional passion he had never before experienced. He watched his muscles rippling in the firelight; his full, protruding pouch; a hint of pubic hair peeking above the drawstring; the orbs of his naked buttocks undulating in the dance. He felt his tumescence straining against his loose breechclout, but he did not care. His sense of freedom and security in this setting was increasing with the growing beat of the drum.
He gasped, as one by one, the hunters overpowered the deer. Red Horse was the final victim. He tossed several of the braves to the ground before he succumbed to the bow. As Red Horse fell to the ground, Robert felt his throat constrict. He almost rose to rush to his aid; then closed his eyes, reminding himself that this was only a dance.
Robert opened his eyes to find the deer-men had been tied to the pole with their arms above their heads. Their heads hung down, feigning death. They had been stripped of their pouches and were now completely naked. Robert could not help but notice all three were partially erect.
